Les héros sont de toutes formes et de toutes tailles. Des créatures divines aux capacités surhumaines aux gens ordinaires qui vivent une vie ordinaire mais qui se montrent à la hauteur lorsque cela est nécessaire. Comparez le bataillon des héros de bandes dessinées des temps modernes aux hommes et aux femmes de la vie réelle qui sont en première ligne contre la maladie, les catastrophes causées par l’homme ou même les ravages causés par la force majeure. Quelle que soit la catégorie de héros dont nous parlons, un fil conducteur relie notre perception de ce qui constitue un héros. Nous voulons la perfection – en fait, nous y aspirons ; et pourtant, curieusement, lorsque nous la voyons en action comme dans les personnages de la télévision, du cinéma ou des livres, nous avons tendance à la considérer comme quelque chose d’inaccessible. On dit que la nature ne trace jamais une ligne droite parfaite. Ironiquement, c’est cette même qualité qui fait la beauté époustouflante du monde naturel. Pensez à passer un après-midi sous les branches noueuses d’un arbre séculaire et vous vivrez un parfait moment de sérénité.  

Parmi le grand nombre d’acteurs aujourd’hui, il semble qu’Engin Akyürek ait l’étonnante capacité de voir au-delà de la ligne droite. Comme en témoigne l’ensemble de son œuvre, le choix de ses personnages n’a jamais été dicté par les limites de la perfection « héroïque ». Jouer l’anti-héros est donc devenu la marque de fabrique de cet acteur sensible, intelligent, immensément talentueux et habile. Chaque rôle qu’il a choisi de jouer est marqué par une capacité unique à prévoir la réaction du public aux personnages qu’il interprète. Il ne serait pas exagéré de dire qu’il n’y a qu’une poignée d’acteurs qui seraient prêts non seulement à se mettre au défi, mais aussi à risquer d’éventuelles retombées négatives de la part du public.  

Prenons par exemple son choix de Mustafa Bulut dans Bir Bulut Olsum,(2009). Jouant un amant épileptique, obsessionnel, passionné et violent, Engin Akyürek a créé le portrait d’un personnage imparfait mais finalement sympathique, qui passe de la poursuite résolue de sa cousine Narin à l’évolution d’un père aimant et peut-être d’un être humain bon. De ses tentatives meurtrières pour éliminer le Dr Serdar et le fiancé de Narin au viol de Narin après qu’il l’ait kidnappée le jour de son mariage, il est peu difficile d’imaginer combien Mustafa Bulut incarne l’anti-héros. 
Et pourtant, la performance d’Akyürek nous touche si profondément que nous commençons presque à l’encourager, surtout après la mort tragique de Serdar.  

La série Sefirin Kizi, écrite et réalisée par l’équipe de scénaristes primés et le directeur de la série à succès Sen Anlat Karadeniz (2018-2019), est produite conjointement par NG Media et 03 Turkey Medya, et possède une bande originale magique de Gökhan Kırdar et Alp Yenier. La série est distribuée par Star TV (2019) Turquie et a terminé sa première saison avec 15 épisodes captivants. Dans le rôle principal de Sancar Efe dans Sefirin Kizi (La fille de l’ambassadeur 2019), Akyürek se met au défi (et nous aussi !) en jouant un homme fier, passionné, possessif, dictatorial, têtu, impénitent et tout aussi impitoyable que « non civilisé ». S’appuyant uniquement sur sa propre boussole morale, il défie toutes les limites de la société dans une sorte d’isolement moral qu’il s’est lui-même imposé. En littérature, il serait immédiatement classé comme la quintessence du héros byronien qui se dirige vers une fin tragique. Le héros byronien est un trope créé par le poète, satiriste et pair anglais, Lord George Gordon Byron, qui était réputé être « fou, mauvais et dangereux à connaître », tel que perçu par une société stagnante de la fin du XVIIIe et du début du XIXe siècle, horrifiée par sa rébellion contre les normes de bienséance acceptées. Les principales caractéristiques du héros byronien sont son génie naturel, son défi à la civilisation, son humeur sombre, son autonomie totale et son adhésion à un code de conduite simple qui met l’accent sur la loyauté et la confiance. C’est un homme irrésistiblement séduisant et rebelle, ce qui lui donne un air de mystère souvent incompréhensible pour la plupart des gens. Fidèle jusqu’à la mort avec ceux qu’il aime, il est rebelle, poussé par le remords et torturé par la culpabilité de ses péchés passés. Le héros byronien est réputé pour être difficile à comprendre et possède une vie intérieure complexe et riche qui n’est accessible qu’à une poignée de personnes.  

Dans le cas de Sancar, seule la fille de l’ambassadeur, Nare, a eu le privilège de pouvoir pénétrer dans les limites du sanctuaire interne de son être. Le premier épisode de Sefirin Kizi a explosé sur les petits écrans comme une bombe. Comment notre « héros » n’a-t-il pas pu croire sa bien-aimée ? Comment a-t-il pu la jeter dehors si impitoyablement ? Comment a-t-il pu être sourd à ses supplications larmoyantes ? Comment a-t-il pu faire passer sa propre douleur de « trahison » avant le traumatisme douloureux de sa bien-aimée ? Ce n’est pas ainsi que l’on s’attend à voir un héros réagir ! La dispute a conduit à un débat acharné sur les héros et l’héroïsme, le témoin de Sancar, Gediz, gagnant haut la main en tant qu’étranger compatissant qui se lie d’amitié avec la belle fille qu’il rencontre accidentellement dans un avion à destination de Bodrum.  

Une polémique violente s’est engagée – certaines défendant Sancar, d’autres le condamnant ainsi que les écrivains qui avaient imaginé un tel scénario ! De nombreux mécontentements ont été échangés sur Instagram ainsi que sur Facebook, les téléspectateurs ayant confondu le personnage fictif de Sancar avec le véritable Akyürek. L’acteur comprend que les personnages imparfaits sont susceptibles d’être détestés, qu’ils sont beaucoup plus risqués à jouer, mais qu’ils sont, en fin de compte, beaucoup plus mémorables et charismatiques pour un public de plus en plus averti. Les cas de Mustafa Bulut, Daghan Soysür, Kerem dans Çocuklar Sana Emanet et Umut dans Bir Ask iki Hayat sont de bons exemples de l’indépendance féroce et du courage d’Akyürek en tant qu’interprète.

‘Sancar Efe- an Imperfect Hero’

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. From godlike creatures with superhuman abilities to ordinary people living ordinary lives but rising to the occasion when required. Compare the battalion of modern day comic book heroes to the real life men and women who act as front liners against disease, man-made disasters or even the ravages caused by force majeure. Whatever the class of hero we talk about, one thread runs common to our perception of what constitutes a hero. We want perfection- in fact, we yearn for it; and yet, strangely enough when we actually see it in action as in characters on TV, film or books we tend to see it as something unattainable. They say nature never draws a perfect straight line. Ironically, it is this very quality that makes for the breath taking beauty of the natural world. Consider spending an afternoon under the gnarled branches of an age old tree and you will experience a perfect moment of serenity.

Among the great number of actors today, it appears that Engin Akyürek has the uncanny ability to see beyond the straight line. As evidenced by the body of his work, his choice of characters has never been dictated by the perimeters of ‘heroic’ perfection. Playing the anti-hero has therefore become the hallmark of this sensitive, intelligent, immensely talented and skillful actor. Each role that he has chosen to play is marked by a unique ability to foresee the audience’s reaction to the characters he plays. It would be no exaggeration to say that there are only a handful of actors who would be willing not only to challenge themselves, but also risk a possible negative fallout from the audience.

Consider for example, his choice of Mustafa Bulut in Bir Bulut Olsum,(2009). Playing an epileptic, obsessive, passionate violent lover; Akyürek created a portrait of a flawed but eventually relatable character who moves from the single minded pursuit of his cousin Narin to evolve as a loving father and possibly a good human being. From his murderous attempts at eliminating Dr. Serdar and Narin’s fiancé to raping Narin after he kidnaps her on her wedding day; there is little left to the imagination of how ‘unheroic’ Mustafa Bulut is. And yet, Akyürek ’s performance touches us so deeply that we almost begin to root for him, especially after Serdar’s tragic death.

Sefirin Kizi, written and directed by the award winning team of writers and director of the successful Sen Anlat Karadeniz ( 2018-2019) series is produced jointly by NG Media and 03 Turkey Medya; and boasts a magical soundtrack by Gökhan Kırdar and Alp Yenie. The series is distributed by Star TV (2019) Turkey and completed its first season with 15 riveting episodes. In playing the lead role of Sancar Efe in Sefirin Kizi (The Ambassador’s Daughter 2019-) Akyürek challenges himself ( and us!) as he plays a proud, passionate, possessive, dictatorial, head strong, unrepentant and equally unforgiving, ‘uncivilized’ man. Relying solely on his own moral compass he defies all societal limitations in a kind of self- imposed moral isolation. In literature, he would immediately be classified as the quintessential Byronic hero hurtling towards a tragic end. The Byronic hero is a trope created by the English poet, satirist and peer, Lord George Gordon Byron; who was reputed to be ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’ as perceived by a staid, late 18th and early 19th C society horrified by his rebelliousness against accepted norms of propriety. The Byronic hero’s essential characteristics are his natural genius, a defiance of civilization, a dark moodiness, complete self reliance and his adherence to a simple code of conduct which emphasizes loyalty and trust. This is a man who is irresistibly attractive, and rebellious; which lends him an air of brooding mystery incomprehensible to most people. Faithful unto death to those he loves, he is rebellious, driven by remorse and tortured by guilt for past sins. Notable for being hard to understand, the Byronic hero possesses a complex and rich inner life which is accessible to only a select few.

In Sancar’s case, it is only Narê– the Ambassador’s daughter who was privileged to be let into the inner sanctuaries of his being. The first episode of Sefirin Kizi exploded on the small screens like a bombshell. How could our ‘hero’ not believe his beloved? how could he throw her out so mercilessly? How could he be deaf to her tearful pleas? How could he put his own pain of ‘betrayal’ before his beloved’s painful trauma? This is not how we expect a hero to act! The fall out led to a fierce debate about heroes and heroism, with Sancar’s best man Gediz winning hands down as the compassionate stranger who befriends the beautiful girl he meets accidentally on a plane bound for Bordrum.

Strong opinions flew back and forth- some defending Sancar; others condemning him as well as the writers who had thought up such a scenario! A lot of angry words were exchanged on Instagram as well as Facebook as a result of viewers having confused the fictionalized character of Sancar with the real Akyürek. The actor understands that imperfect characters are apt to be disliked, are far riskier to play but that they are, in the final analysis, far more memorable and charismatic for increasingly discerning audiences. The cases of Mustafa Bulut, Daghan Soysür, Kerem in Çocuklar Sana Emanet and Umut in Bir Ask iki Hayat are prime examples of Akyürek’s fierce independence and courage as a performer.

Kahramanlar çeşitli şekil ve boyutlarda olabilirler, insanüstü yeteneklere sahip ilahi yaratıklardan sıradan bir hayat yaşayan ancak gerektiğinde harekete geçen normal insanlara kadar. Günümüz çizgi roman kahramanlarını; hastalıklarla, insan yapımı felaketlerle ve hatta çeşitli sebeplerin yol açtığı tahribatlarla ön saflarda çarpışan erkek ve kadınlarla karşılaştırın. Bahsettiğimiz kahraman kategorisi ne olursa olsun, bir kahramanın ana özelliklerine dair algımızda ortak bir nokta vardır: Mükemmellik bekliyoruz – aslında bunu arzu ediyoruz; ancak ilginçtir ki televizyonda, filmlerde veya kitap karakterlerinde bu özelliği gördüğümüzde, bunun erişilemez olduğu kanaatine varıyoruz. Doğanın asla mükemmel bir düz çizgi çizmediğini söylerler. İronik olarak, doğal dünyaya nefes kesici güzelliğini sağlayan da bu özelliğidir. Bir öğleden sonrayı yaşlı bir ağacın dallarının altında geçirmeyi düşleyin, mükemmel bir huzur anı yaşayacaksınız.

Öyle görünüyor ki bugünün çok sayıdaki oyuncuları arasında Engin Akyürek’in düz çizginin ötesini gören inanılmaz bir yeteneği var. Tüm dizi ve film çalışmaları tarafından kanıtlandığı gibi, karakterlerinin seçimi asla « kahraman » mükemmelliği açısından yapılmamıştır. Bu nedenle anti-kahramanı oynamak, bu hassas, zeki ve son derece yetenekli aktörün alametifarikası oldu. Oynamayı seçtiği her rol, seyircinin oynadığı karakterlere tepkisini öngörme konusunda eşsiz bir olanak sağlıyor. Sadece kendi sınırlarını zorlamakla kalmayıp, aynı zamanda seyirciden olumsuz tepkiler alma riskini de göze alan az sayıda aktör olduğunu söylemek abartı olmaz.

Örneğin Bir Bulut Olsum’da Mustafa Bulut’u seçtiği gibi (2009). Epilepsi hastası, takıntılı, tutkulu ve şiddete başvuran bir aşığı oynayan Engin Akyürek, kuzeni Narin’in peşini bırakmayan bir adamdan sevgi dolu bir babaya ve belki de iyi bir insana evrilen, sorunlu ancak nihayetinde sempatik bir karaktere can verdi. Düğün gününde Narin’i kaçırıp ona tecavüz etmesinden tutun da Doktor Serdar ve Narin’in nişanlısını yok etmek için ölümcül girişimlerde bulunmasına kadar Mustafa Bulut’un bir “anti-kahraman” olduğu açıktır. Tüm bunlara rağmen Akyürek’in performansı bize çok derinden dokunurken, özellikle de Serdar’ın trajik ölümünden sonra onu neredeyse desteklemeye başlıyoruz.

Sen Anlat Karadeniz (2018-2019) isimli başarılı dizinin ödüllü iki senaristi tarafından yazılan ve yönetmenince yönetilen Sefirin Kızı dizisi, NG Media ve 03 Turkey Medya ortak yapımı olup dizinin etkileyici müzikleri Gökhan Kırdar ve Alp Yenier’in eserlerinden oluşuyor. Star TV (2019) Türkiye tarafından yayınlanan dizi ilk sezonunu 15 büyüleyici bölümle tamamladı. Sefirin Kızı’nda başroldeki Sancar Efe’yi canlandıran Akyürek; gururlu, tutkulu, sahiplenici, diktatör, dik kafalı, korkusuz ve bir bakıma acımasız, « medeniyetsiz » bir adamı oynayarak kendine (ve bize!) adeta meydan okuyor.

Sancar Efe karakteri sadece kendi ahlaki pusulasına dayanarak, toplumun tüm sınırlarına, kendisine koyduğu bir tür ahlaki inzivayla meydan okuyor. Sancar Efe, edebiyatta kendini trajik bir sona götüren Byronik kahramanın bir benzeri olarak sınıflandırılabilir. Byronik kahraman, 18. yüzyıl sonları ve 19. yüzyıl başlarında, kabul görmüş toplumsal ahlak standartlarına karşı isyanıyla dehşete düşürdüğü gerekçesiyle « çılgın, kötü ve tanımanın tehlikeli olduğu » biri olarak bilinen İngiliz şair ve hicivci Lord George Gordon Byron tarafından yazılmış bir oyundur. Byronik kahramanın temel özellikleri onun doğal dehası, medeniyete meydan okuması, karanlık öfkesi, mutlak özerkliği ile sadakati ve güveni vurgulayan basit davranış kurallarına bağlılığıdır.

O, dayanılmaz derecede çekici ve asi bir adamdır ve bu özellikleri ona çoğu insan için anlaşılmaz olan gizemli bir hava verir. Sevdiklerine ölümüne sadık olan bu kahraman, isyan eder, pişmanlık çeker ve geçmiş günahlarının suçu yüzünden kendi kendine işkence eder. Byronik kahramanın anlaşılmasının zor olduğu söylenir ve sadece bir avuç insanın erişebileceği karmaşık ve zengin bir iç hayata sahiptir.

Sancar örneğinde, yalnızca sefirin kızı Nare, onun varlığının kutsal alanlarına girme ayrıcalığına sahipti. Sefirin Kızı dizisinin ilk bölümü beyaz ekranda bomba etkisi yarattı. « Kahramanımız » sevgilisine nasıl inanamazdı? Onu nasıl bu kadar acımasızca kapı dışarı atabilirdi? Nasıl onun gözyaşıyla dolu yalvarmalarına karşı sağır olabilirdi? Sevdiği kadının acı verici travmasının önüne nasıl kendi « ihanet » acısını koyabilirdi? Bir kahramanın böyle davranması beklenmiyordu! Bu sahneler kahramanlar ve kahramanlık hakkında, Sancar’ın sadıcı Gediz’in, Bodrum’a doğru yol aldığı uçakta yanlışlıkla karşılaştığı güzel kızla arkadaş olan merhametli yabancı görünümüyle kolayca kazandığı hararetli bir tartışmaya yol açtı.

Güçlü görüşler dile getirildi – bazıları Sancar’ı savunurken, diğerleri onu ve böyle bir senaryoyu hayal edebilen senaristleri kınıyordu! Sancar’ın kurgusal karakterini gerçek Akyürek ile karıştıran izleyiciler, hem Instagram hem de Facebook’ta birçok öfke dolu söylemde bulundu. Oyuncu ise, kusurlu karakterlerden nefret edileceğini, oynanmasının çok daha riskli olduğunu, ancak nihayetinde farkında olan kitle için bu tarz rollerin daha unutulmaz ve karizmatik olduğunu anlıyordu. Mustafa Bulut, Daghan Soysür, Çocuklar Sana Emanet filmindeki Umut ve Bir Ask iki Hayat filmindeki Umut rolleri, Akyürek’in sanatçı olarak gösterdiği bağımsızlık ve cesaretin güzel örnekleridir.
